Robert S. Bateman graduated from LSU with a BS degree
in Landscape Architecture in 1972 then served for two years in the
United States Air Force after which he returned to LSU and received
his Masters in Landscape Architecture. Mr. Bateman worked with the Alabama State Planning Board
in Montgomery, AL for three years doing City Planning Consulting.
In
1959, he moved to Mobile and set up his own City
Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Traffic Engineering business. He continued
with the United States Air Force Reserve and retired as Lt. Col. in 1973
while continuing to build his professional organization to a staff of
10.
In 1980, he sold Robert S. Bateman & Associates to the
employees. Robert then built a large garden center in West Mobile and
ran the business for twenty years.
Mr. Bateman has been growing palms
since 1947. His farm of over 45 acres grows nearly 35,000 palms from 2’ to
12’. These palms are field grown, dug with a tree spade, wrapped in burlap and finally put into a wire basket.
